Clay Turtles

This is a lesson that I teach to kids in first and second grade. They get to make a hemisphere for the shell. First the kids create a sphere, then they tap it on the tabletop a few times to create a flat bottom. To attach the legs, kids make cylinders, flip the shell upside down and then overlap the legs onto the shell so that they are securely attached. If the kids just use a butt joint and stick the legs to the side of the shell, they will fall off before or during the firing. The kids use bisque stamps to add textures to the top of the turtle's shell.
