Skunks are high contrast animals. Their distinctive black and white coloration keeps predators awau from them. This skunk lesson is about contrast. The simple definition that I give to kids for contrast is that "contrast means opposite".

On all of the animals my students create, they start by making the larger forms first. In the case of these skunks, the kids made the body, head and legs first. They made the tails last so that we could bend them and have remain upright. The skunks are textured when kids press the side of their pencil tips into the soft clay to create fur.
