Clay Mice

This is a lesson I teach to kids in first grade. They create a little egg form or a sphere, flatten the bottom and then add the legs. The legs get attached underneath so the kids can do a really thorough job of smoothing them on. The facial features are all spheres, and the ears are simply spheres that are flattened slightly and added on. I tell the kids that the ears get attached sideways like the headlights on a car bumper.

Sometimes we glaze the mice and other times we paint them. For the painted ones I apply Sax Platinum Acrylic Varnish over the top to make them shiny.

There is a great book titled Frederick that is about a little mouse who is an artist. I read this to the kids as part of this lesson.
