Frogs and Princes

Kids in art class have been learning that the word genre means 'categories of art'. The word genre also pops up in English class when the kids learn about various types of literature and writing. The kids created art works based on the fairy tale genre of the princess and the frog.

The kids worked on watercolor paintings of either a princess or a prince, and then they created a clay frog wearing a crown.

Like most lessons in elementary art classes these paintings and sculptures started with the kids using basic shapes and forms to create a more complex image. Artists intuitively look for simple shapes and forms when they are beginning an artwork so they have a place to start. This is one of the things I teach the kids as part of every lesson.
