These clay dragons are the three-dimensional part of a lesson about the fantasy genre in art. Kids have compared and contrasted Chinese dragons with their European counterparts. They created drawings of the Chinese dragons and then created clay sculptures of the European dragons. The kids learned how to make cone forms as part of this lesson. They made a large cone for the body and then bent the top at a 90° angle to create the head.

Kids were encouraged to decide which features of the European dragons that they wished to include in their version. You can see the diverse approaches each kid took as he or she approached this assignment.
