Majolica Flowers

This is another one of the flat clay lessons I teach to kindergarten students. We look at the works of the painter Georgia O'Keefe and I read to them a book about her life. Then we create flower paintings and clay tiles. The kids have to make little cylinders for the petals of the flowers, and this is tricky for some of them. This lesson gets them to work on their cylinder rolling skills.

In the past I have used a small 2 inch by 2 inch tile cutting square for the background tile. I have also cut circles out for the background using a tomato paste can as the stamp. I prefer the look of the square tiles.
