Clay Dogs

Our school mascot at Burr Elementary School is the bulldog. Some of my students made clay bulldogs to give away as gifts to visitors coming to our school.

I had the kids look at dog images on the television monitor in my art room as inspiration. Since my students are becoming quite proficient in clay, I only needed to give them two pieces of advice to make their dogs.

The first was that when making dogs, it is important to make the dog have a snout. A dog's mouth is not flat against its face the way a mouth is on a person.

The second tip was that to make a dog sitting, the back needs to be at an angle. To make the body look like it is leaning forward, I taught the kids how to create an egg form and then how to flatten the bottom on an angle to make the egg/body lean forward.
