Clay Chickens

Students in my second grade classes create clay chickens. They also make chicken paintings. As part of this lesson, the kids read chicken jokes, learn what dialogue is, and what a punch line is.

In their social studies class they study the differences between rural, urban and suburban areas so making clay chickens connects to these ideas.

We make these chickens from Rovin's RO-82 Terra Cotta clay body and dip them in our white majolica glaze. The kids then paint lowfire glazes and underglazes over the top of the majolica glaze for the colored parts of the chickens. Other chickens have been painted with tempera paint and coated with Sax Acrylic Platinum Medium.
